So Kevin Smith has now thrown in his hat for The Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League.

In the latest episode of his YouTube show with Marc Bernardin, Kevin Smith talked about the controversy regarding the version of Justice League that never saw the light of day and said that he would be very interested in seeing that if only Warner Bros. would release it.

To which I reply…

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER ANYTHING PAST 6 WEEKS AGO?

I mean, really. Let’s recap, shall we?

  • Dawn Of The Dead — Not bad, got him noticed.
  • 300 — Ok, pretty cool. Frank Miller’s original work was weird so it worked.
  • Watchmen — Uh oh. Looks right but feels oh so wrong.
  • Suckerpunch — W.T.F. I’ve seen porn less exploitative.
  • Man Of Steel — Superman saves Metropolis by wiping out 75% of it. Yea?
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice — We couldn’t afford the “s” in “vs.” The title was already too long. That makes no sense you say? Well neither did the movie. Also, Jessie Eisenberg turned Lex Luthor into Mark Zuckerberg with Tourettes.

If anyone thinks The Zack Snyder Cut is some kind of masterpiece just waiting to be unleashed upon the world, THINK AGAIN.

Man of Steel really ruined Superman. Specifically, in two scenes that flew in the face of Christopher Reeve’s portrayal as well as the canonical character.

Bullies

In Superman II, there was a bully in a truck stop that beat up Clark when he was powerless. Once he got back his powers, he gave the bully a little comeuppance.

OK, nice!

He doesn’t actually punch the guy, he lets the guy hurt himself. There’s no permanent damage, the bully is just taught a lesson.

And… he’s so polite about it that he pays for all the damages, which are minor at best.

This is exactly how I would imagine Superman would act. It’s not about getting the better of the bully, it’s the massive amount restraint he shows.

Compare that to Snyder’s crap:

The bully didn’t throw one punch. No blood was spilled. No damage was had.

The beer can thrown was empty. Well, I guess he showed restraint.

He didn’t kill him or punch him, so I guess it’s… OMYGOD, HE DESTROYED THE MAN’S LIVELIHOOD!

This Was Awful!

Superman understands the punishment should fit the crime. What’s interesting about Superman isn’t that he’s so powerful, it’s that he knows exactly how much power to apply to a particular situation. It’s when his power is not enough or when he can’t be in two places at once or when they use his power against him.

That’s what makes it interesting.

He wouldn’t do this! Don’t give me the “early in his career” stuff. Ma and Pa Kent would’ve taught him better than that.

Of course, Kevin Costner opted for suicide rather than continue trying to raise this monster.

Collateral Damage

Ok, so I think a lot has been rightly made about the massive destruction but again I want to narrow in on two scenes.

First, in Superman II the villains throw a bus at Supes. He is frantic to stop them and not have anyone get hurt. (Wasn’t Reeve awesome?)

Now compare it to this scene in Man Of Steel.

Holy God. He didn’t even attempt to stop that tanker truck! Not even a look back to see if any poor souls were just heading to their cars in the parking lot. They’re dead now.

Oh well… HEROIC!

So, no — I do not want to watch a Snyder cut. I agree that Justice League wasn’t great. It was a discount Avengers and had tons of problems.

But at least it seemed like it wasn’t trying to actively crap on the characters.

Whedon did the best he could with the turd sandwich Snyder handed him. I see no reason to remove the bread and just have a plain turd.
