Production To Begin This Year

Eddie Murphy is returning to reprise one of his classic 80s characters.

Before Wakanda, there were these 2 guys!

According to Deadline, Murphy has signed on to feature in a sequel to 1988’s Coming To America. It will be directed by Craig Brewer, who just finished working with Murphy on Netflix’s Dolemite Is My Name, which is due out this year.

Rumors of a sequel to the hit film have actually been ongoing since 2013, but the project has since remained in development hell.

This news is official though, and there’s even some kind of synopsis:

“In the sequel, Akeem learns about a long lost son and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. The intention is to bring back the original cast which includes Arsenio Hall, who played the Prince’s aide Semmi, Shari Headley, who was courted by the Prince when he went undercover as a fast food worker, John Amos, who played her father, and James Earl Jones, who played the King.”

In a statement announcing his involvement, Murphy spoke of getting back to work on the next chapter of Prince Akeem’s story:

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming To America 2 is officially moving forward. We’ve assembled a great team that will be lead by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite Is My Name, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

Eriq La Salle must return!

There’s currently no word on when we can expect Coming To America 2 to hit theaters.
