Resistance Is Futile. Or Not?

You’ll forgive me  — or not — for going with the low-hanging fruit.

Via StarWars.com, Lucasfilm has begun production on a new animated series titled Star Wars Resistance. As far as the Star Wars timeline, the series will take place somewhen between Return of The Jedi and The Force Awakens.

Why hope for Star Wars is futile

While I’m aware that I’m not the target demographic – children and easily appeased fans of the franchise – there are some interesting bits that suggest the show may hold some promise.

First, the people involved. Star Wars Resistance is the brain child of Dave Filoni, the guy responsible for Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. I enjoyed Clone Wars and have heard good things regarding Rebels. In addition to Filoni, the other Powers That Be involved include Executive Producers Athena Portillo and Justin Ridge from aforementioned series, as well as Amy Beth Christenson, the lead Artisitc Director for both Clone Wars and Rebels.

Second, the theme. From series creator, David Filoni:

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

The story will focus on the character Kazuda Xiono, a pilot and member of the Resistance tasked with spying on the First Order. And BB-8. Because cute robots move toys?

Stylistically, the show will draw influences from animé, which, barring googly-eyes, could prove interesting.

Star Wars Resistance is set to release this fall on the Disney Channel stateside and on Disney XD globally. One last note, for those who care, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie will both turn up at some point to voice their respective characters. Yay?

Cider out.
