“As Far Back As I Can Remember, I Always Wanted To Be A Gangster.”

Goodfellas star Ray Liotta is set to join Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, Corey Stoll, and Michael Gandolfini in The Many Saints Of Newark.

We’ve already reported that James Gandolfini’ son, Michael, will be playing young Tony Soprano, but it’s safe to assume he won’t be high on the food chain just yet. So the idea that the man who played Henry Hill is returning to the gangster genre, is great news.

Speaking about the role, Liotta said:

“I am thrilled to be working with David Chase and Alan Taylor on The Many Saints of Newark. David’s talent is unmatched and the directing of Alan Taylor makes this even more exciting. I respect them both immensely and look forward to making this special project with New Line.”

Liotta joining The Sopranos universe continues the tradition of Goodfellas cast members who appeared in the series — 27 in total including stars Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Frank Vincent, and Tony Sirico.

Alan Taylor, who directed several episodes of the show, is directing the film and it’s set to the backdrop of the race riots that took place in New Jersey during the late 60s.

The Sopranos mastermind David Chase has written the script for The Many Saints Of Newark, and Vera Farmiga, Alessandro Nivola, and Jon Bernthal will also star in the film.

There’s still no official release date yet.
