After a battle amongst major film studios, Universal has won the international distribution rights to the 25th installment of the James Bond franchise and has also secured rights for physical home entertainment.
Sony has distributed the previous four 007 flicks to record global grosses, but that deal had them putting up about half the budget for around 25% of the profit.
No idea what’s involved in Universal’s new deal, but securing these rights are as much about bragging rights and keeping a premier league franchise away from the competition as it is about making billions from the James Bond brand.
Universal now has the Bourne franchise, the 007 flicks and the Fast and the Furious movies.
Daniel Craig will return as 007 and Danny Boyle is now confirmed to direct from an original screenplay by John Hodge. The film will begin production December 3, and MGM will release the film in the United States on Nov. 8, 2019 through a partnership with Annapurna Pictures.
Universal will release the film in the U.K. Oct 25, 2019.
