Status Update From Producer
The Meg turned out to be a rather unexpected success when it released in theaters last year, grossing over $500m worldwide.
Back in October we learned that a sequel to director Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg was already being developed, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura now provides a wee bit of additional on that:
“We’re working on a script. Yeah. So you never know until you get a good script. … I was very thankful that the audience got that we were just trying to have fun, [and] not take ourselves seriously at all.”
This makes sense with the comments executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying put out there while appearing at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles back in October when she said:
“[A sequel is] definitely the plan. It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time.”
There’s certainly no shortage of sequel potential here, as author Steve Alten has to date penned 8 novels in his Meg franchise.
Plenty to pull from there, to say the least. Maybe they’ll even take the chance and go for the R rating!
We will see.
