Robbin’ From The Bottom Of The Barrel?

Robin Hood Jamie Fox
Umm…

Hearing about this project I was instantly skeptical. Another one? Really? What can possibly be left to to say? While the last (major) incarnation of the story was Ridley Scott’s 2010 take Robin Hood, it feels like we’ve had many, many versions of this story told. Curious, I searched that endless trough of knowledge Wikipedia and learned that, starting with the 1908 silent film Robin Hood And His Merry Men, there have been at least 76 movies, specials and both live and animated (including one from Japan) TV series.

As for myself, I’m a kid of the 80’s. My definitive experience with the legend was via the (fantastic) British series Robin Of Sherwood.

But this is Hollywood, so…

Know your target audience. I guess.

But Wait, There’s More!

As is often the case, this is not the only Robin Hood project in development. The Wachowski gals are currently writing (and will direct) Hood, a “modern adaptation of the legend.” Coincidence that “Hood” is so pronounced for this one? That’s also my less cynical explanation.

In addition to these two projects, Sony Pictures has tabled the idea of creating a Robin Hood shared universe, the idea being Robin’s merry band of heroes would get their own standalone films. To which Paramount says “Hold my beer.” Not to be outdone, Disney is planning its own franchise, along similar lines to Pirates Of The Caribbean, tentatively titled – and I’m not joking – Nottingham & Hood. Sounds like a sammich to me.

Robin Hood (this one) stars Taron Egerton as Robin Hood, Jamie Foxx as Little John and Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham. It’s targeted to let fly November 21st.
