Ben Is a Funny Guy

During an interview with Metro UK, Mendelsohn shared some of his opinions on the recent spat between Disney and Sony Pictures over the cinematic rights to Spider-Man:

“I think what happens in these things is, most of the time, cooler heads prevail. Sometimes we end up in a situation which feels like it’s going to be the lead up to World War I.”

Hyperbole and allegory are always understood by the press when an actor uses them

I’m surprised that a Twitter mob hasn’t come for him after he compared a corporate dispute over a comic book character to a conflict that killed tens of millions.

Then again, only white males died in World War I, so who cares?

Moving On

Ben explained just how important Spider-Man is to the MCU:

“But shit, man. You can’t lose Spider-Man from the Marvel universe. He’s one of their absolute motherfucking pornstars. Boy, I could name 30 that you could quite comfortably lose before you start thinking about losing Spider-Man.”

Thirty? How about we just start with one?

This is called “foreshadowing.”

Oh, right… back to Spider-Man. Mendelson went even further, revealing himself to be a serious comic book fan or perhaps just a stable genius:

“In fact, I cannot think of a single character who’s more important to Marvel than Spider-Man. You’ve got Hulk, you’ve got Thor… none of them are as important as Spider-Man. None of them.”

Yes, despite our love for everything Wolverine and The Punisher, Spider-Man is, without question, the most popular character in Marvel Comics.

Even after the MCU.

Pretty impressive stuff, huh? I was honestly surprised myself.

Wait until you mix in Batman:

The Cape Crusader is still tops over time, but right now The Webslinger has taken the lead. One only need look at the sheer number of quality appearances Spider-Man has made in the last couple of years to understand why.

Civil War. Two standalone movies. Two Avengers movies. A video game. Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse. All were extremely well-received.

What did Batman do? Suicide Squad and a stupid Fox TV show?

This is obviously why Kevin Feige wanted Spider-Man back in the MCU.

That and to have Peter Parker hookup with Captain Marvel to make her character more likable. And by “hook up” I mean they are going to be fucking.

Peter Parker got something for her
