**Update** Somehow I got my wires crossed badly on Shazam! So I’m adjusting. Sorry about that.

Welcome to Box Office Battle, where we make predictions on the upcoming movies of the month!

Let’s talk bubbles. We like to accuse the left of living in a bubble and it’s generally true. But once in a while, we caught in our bubbles. Case in point, Captain Marvel.

Those of us with our ear to the ground saw all the political BS surrounding it. Rotten Tomatoes irresponsible behavior, Brie Larson’s condescending contempt, and a generally mediocre movie with a feminist bent. But what we forgot about was the normies.

Most people just want to watch their movies and go home. They could care less about this stuff unless it’s really unavoidable. For the most part, the negative buzz around Captain Marvel was very avoidable. All they knew was 1) Avengers Infinity War had them salivating for anything Marvel and 2) It looked cool enough. That was all it took.

The other thing to note is that Captain Marvel as a movie doesn’t damage the brand, so Endgame will be fine. The Last Jedi on the other hand actually hurt the brand. Solo, a movie that’s not nearly as bad as the box office numbers would have you believe, was punished for it.

We really didn’t take that into account. It’s a good lesson, never underestimate the power of a brand.

Before we get started, let’s see how everyone did in March.

Shazam!

YODA: Everything I’m hearing is amazing! This may hit hard and fast and kill it with word of mouth. Will it be able to hold past the Avengers juggernaut? Hard to say but still, I’m calling $65.

COMPUTER GUY: There has been a good buzz around this, plus goodwill from Aquabro. The production has not been full of a-holes either.  $47 million.

Gigantic Cahuna: Sandwiched in here with people holding on to their $$$ before Endgame, plus low recognition outside us geeks.  I am going low. $49 million.

SKANK: So this guy is the real Captain Marvel, right? I like what I’ve seen from the trailers, and it’s dropping during the holidays. $55 million.

Official Tracking: $45,000,000 Open

Hellboy

YODA: Am I the only one who never liked this franchise? I feel like a geek traitor. Not sure if this is tracking high or not. $23

COMPUTER GUY: There may be some bad blood from the fans of the older series. Not hearing much hype about it either. $19 million.

GIGANTIC CAHUNA: Who?  Why? Did anyone ask for this? $15,000,000 purely off confused people buying the wrong tickets.

SKANK: I liked the original movies a lot, but no idea how close those adapted movies were to the source material. What I’m trying to say is, this is just a guess. $15 million.

Official Tracking: $17,000,000

Avengers: Endgame

YODA: The bulldozer. Break it’s own record? I don’t know. But I’m pulling for it. Screw it. First $300 million weekend in history.

COMPUTER GUY: Despite Captain Sourpuss, there are a lot of MCU fans that want to see how this ends. $300 million.

GIGANTIC CAHUNA: US only, right?  $291 million.

SKANK: This is the end of the MCU Golden Years. I boldly predict $305 million.

Official Tracking: $265,000,000 Open
