That Joker Movie You Definitely Need Has Such A Good Cast

According to Deadline, Alec Baldwin could be taking on the role of Thomas Wayne in the upcoming Joker movie. Filming will start early next month, probably after the Venice Film Festival, where Joaquin Phoenix’s latest film, The Sisters Brothers, will premiere.

Baldwin joins a growing cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond. As has been previously reported, Phillips’ take on the famed DC character will possess a grittier, ’80s sensibility.

For what it’s worth, I think the idea of a Joker spin-off is needed. Actually, I think it’s smart for DC to step away from the expanded universe model and do smaller, more compact projects that don’t cost $300m+ or rely on the strict aesthetics of one director.

Earlier this month, the Clown Prince of Crime (Phoenix) admitted that he doesn’t really care how people respond to his DC portrayal.

“I don’t really think that much about what people think, who cares, who cares?. My approach to every movie is the same. What I’m interested in is the filmmaker and the idea of the character. I think more than anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting. I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real-life struggles.”

This might be the ideal project to kick-start that new phase with because at least it’s a fresh idea and could perhaps wash away the foul taste of the most recent DC efforts. Mostly, I’m in it to watch Phoenix as The Dark Knight’s arch-nemesis. It’ll be amazing to watch.
