“You need people of intelligence on this sort of mission…quest…thing.”

There’s no word on who he will be playing in the film but it reunites the actor with director J.J. Abrams who he previously worked with on Lost. Monaghan said in a statement:

“The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved.”

Monaghan has also been tweeting the news all week:

Last month, Abrams brought another one of his actors into the Star Wars fold, Keri Russell who worked with Abrams on his beloved series Felicity, in which she played the titular role. Both Monaghan and Russell will join series newcomers Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, as well as returning cast members like Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Daniels.

Episode IX has already started and images have already started making their way online:

Directed by Abrams, Star Wars Episode IX stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd and Anthony Daniels.

It’s scheduled to open on Dec 20, 2019.
