Indiana Jones 5, the first film in the franchise without creator George Lucas in the fold, will soon go into production and star Harrison Ford told Hey U Guys he is not interested in giving fans the movie they want.

“I don’t really want to give them what they want to see, I want to give them something they didn’t anticipate.”

The easy thing to do is make the obvious joke about how all people want is for the movie to just be good and assume that the now Disney led Lucasfilm will just use nostalgia to fuel the movie.

But it seems like Ford may have learned that’s probably not the best way to go since fans…

“…are used to a degree of disappointment when you revisit.”

Wow. Is it possible that someone in Hollywood has learned from the town’s mistakes of trying to ride nostalgia to box office success?

Hopefully. But it still needs to be done right. The Last Jedi tried to do the same and subvert fan expectations but it did not go quite as well as planned.

He also went on to say…

“We’re not going to make another Indiana Jones unless we are in a position to kill it. We want it to be the best. We’ve got some scheduling issues and a few script things to do but we are determined to get it right before we get it made.”

Which is also nice, but they said the same when they made Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. It took them nearly 20 years to get that script where they thought it needed to be for that and it just resulted in a dud.

Who knows what to expect with this film. Lucas not being involved is somewhat of a wildcard. Though many of the story elements people hated about Crystal Skull could be attributed to him, he was also heavily responsible for the other three films which people loved.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to be released July 9, 2021
