Not that Man in Black…

Some Not So Inconceivable Casting

Stranger Things Casting Man In Black
Anyone work for peanuts?

What? You thought I’d go there in the headline? Inconceivable.

Right. So, thespian and actor Cary Elwes and Jake Busey (respectively) have been cast in the upcoming third season of the current Netflix meme-machine that is Stranger Things.

Via Variety, Elwes will be playing one Mayor Kline. Per a Netflix promotional release, the character is described as “handsome, slick, and sleazy.” “Your classic ’80s politician – more concerned with his own image than with the people of the small town he governs.”†

While Elwes is best known for his role as Westley aka The Man in Black in the 1987 movie The Princess Bride, he’s since enjoyed a very steady film career, including a starring role in 2004’s Saw and recurring roles in The X-Files and Psyche. This in addition to voiceover work in both video games and animation, including Pinky and The Brain, of all things.

Just Another Bug Hunt?

As for Jake “Son of Mad Dog Gary” Busey, Variety reports that the once and super starship trooper will play the part of Bruce, a character described as  “a journalist for The Hawkins Post, with questionable morals and a sick sense of humor.”

Just as Elwes had a career defining role as The Man in Black, for Busey it was the part of infantry grunt Ace Levy in Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 ultra violent bug hunt Starship Troopers that the actor is most often remembered for today. While Troopers would never rise to the dizzying – and for countless girlfriends and wives, annoying – heights of pop culture godhood within the greater zeitgeist, the role and movie are both memorable, the latter in particular for it’s biting satire on right-wing militarism. All things considered…

Is this going to be a standup fight, Sir?

Season 3 of Stranger Things goes upside down before cameras in Atlanta this summer. Christ. What isn’t being shot here?

†Versus politicians today?
