New Mutant For The New Mutants

Following a trailer release that was met with skepticism about it’s quality, to say the least, Fox has ordered some reshoots for superhero horror film The New Mutants. It’s been said that coming out of test screenings the movie is not nearly scary enough.

For this reason, Fox has chosen to try for a darker and more horrific tone, as well as adding a new character to the movie. That new character’s (secret) identity has so far been kept under wraps.

Is it someone from the Deadpool universe? Does Negasonic Teenage Warhead save the day again?

Someone from the X-Men: First Class world? We honestly have no idea who that might be considering most of the good-guy mutants in that movie were genuinely laughable — what was the name of that Wasp-like character that flew around and had energy “stings”? Yeah, we don’t remember either.

Perhaps X-23? This seems like an odd choice considering the timelines. But when has that mattered when box office dollars are on the line? And she is an incredibly popular character from the most popular Wolverine stand-alone movie.

Despite an interesting cast and the now popular idea of a superhero movie taking place in a horror setting we’re a little more than skeptical.

The New Mutants from the original comic run are this team of hyper-competent, brainy teenagers that just as often overcome obstacles through strategy as they do with their superpowers alone. They were kind of these happy-go-lucky kids that were a respite from the darker, “adult” adventures of The Uncanny X-Men who were continually going through massacres, apocalypses and infernos.

Anyone remember these fun-loving whippersnappers?

It seems a little weird to make them into edgy, shrieking, jumping-at-every-shadow, emo-kid victims from some Blumhouse production. And considering the returns that Blumhouse is putting up with their low-budget horror films, it also seems more than a little cynical.

Hopefully these reshoots can actually capture the correct tone and make the The New Mutants a quality entry into the X-Men universe.
