This Guy’s Living In The Past

Good, I hope he stays there.

Whatever you have to say about The VVitch, you have to admit that it’s pretty damn period-accurate and not just in the aesthetic. The language, the family structure, the customs, the banishment, all felt hyper-realistic.

We haven’t seen any of The Lighthouse yet. Others have and are obsessing over a Robert Pattinson masturbation scene but let’s hope there is more to it than that.

But based on the trailers, it looks like Eggers has delivered another authentic period piece.

Now, it’s being reported that Eggers’s next project will be a Viking revenge piece that he co-wrote with Icelandic writer Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, who goes by the pen name of Sjón meaning “sight.”

Oh boy.

Sjón is probably best known in the Anglosphere for his collaborations with the singer Björk, who also hails from Iceland.

What is up with that country and fucking weirdos?

By the way, did you know Björk’s last name is Guðmundsdóttir, which was also the last name of the artist character whom Tim Robbins falls for in The Player?

“If we can just get rid of these actors and directors we might be onto something…”

Anyway, The Northman is described as a grounded story set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century that centers on a Nordic prince who seeks revenge for the death of his father.

Sounds very straight forward. Then again, I seem to recall the Viking show over on the History Channel is filled with all kinds of strong, independent shield maidens.

Highly accurate

A female anthropologist found possibly one example of this one time that a woman was killed in battle and buried in a “military” grave, therefore, that’s conclusive evidence that “already in the early middle ages, there were narratives about fierce female Vikings fighting alongside men.”

So, they were delusional back then too?

Or have these warrior women always been hidden from us by sexist historians?

Nicole Kidman and Anna Taylor Joy are up for roles alongside Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe, so we might just have to put up with some stunning bravery to go with our Scandinavian slaughter.

After all, historical accuracy all depends on whose version of history we are using.

Did you know that Vikings weren’t coastal raiders at all, but peaceful farmers who only wanted to tend their crops in tranquility?

It’s true.
