2009’s Star Trek reboot under JJ Abrams made bank and was well recieved.  The follow up, Star Trek Into Darkness, annoyed a large section of fandom with its reverse take on the ending of Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan and some iffy character moments.

Fan cynicism from Into Darkness and a cack-handed advertising campaign impacted the box office of the far superior Star Trek Beyond.

Where Do We Go From Here?

All the main crew had a 3 picture deal that ended with Beyond.  However many have expressed an interest in returning including Zach Quinto, Chris Pine and Karl Urban.

There was an original idea that would serve as complete closure of the alternate timeline universe by bringing back Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s father through the medium of time travel.

Somebody get me my fucking hammer!

George Kirk died heroically saving the crew of the USS Kelvin during the incident that set-up this timeline in the first place.

This was thrown into doubt by the news that Quentin Tarantino had pitched an idea for an R-rated Trek movie to suits.

Now in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada, Quinto reveals nothing is set and there is a THIRD dog in this fight?

“First of all, I think there’s a couple of scripts. Because there was a script being written before Quentin Tarantino came up with his idea for a potential film. And so I think they are kind of developing more than one. So I don’t know what is going to happen. Quentin is off doing another movie.

So, I feel like we are in a state of anticipation. All of us are really excited about the idea of working with Quentin on a Trek film, but I know Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, who wrote the last film, are writing a script and there are another set of writers writing a script. So I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

So there we have it.  No confirmed cast, no selected script, no set direction of travel.  The only thing we do know is that Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy will not be reprising their roles.
