The Vampire Chronicles, which was being developed into a series for Hulu, is no longer a go at the streamer.

The show was going to be based on the highly popular series of books written by Anne Rice.

According to Variety, now that the show is no longer happening at Hulu, Rice is trying to shop it around elsewhere and asking for somewhere between $30 – $40 million for the TV and film rights to all the books.

That’s a lot of money, but whoever bites on the offer will wind up owning it in perpetuity and not have to worry about the rights running out on them.

When the possibility of a Vampire Chronicles show was a real thing, former Star Trek and American Gods producer Bryan Fuller was on board to run things, but he has since parted ways.

The first book in the series, Interview With The Vampire, was turned in a film directed by Neil Jordan in 1994, with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt starring. Eventually, a number of years later, a sequel, Queen Of The Damned, was produced without any of them involved and flopped at the box office.

The books are not as popular, or even as good, as they used to be, but for a while they were a very hot property in Hollywood. At one point they were popular enough that James Cameron was interested in directing Queen Of The Damned.

Rice’s books are also what helped start the trend of vampires turning from monsters to sparkly heartthrobs. So if it wasn’t for her, for better or for worse, things like the Twilight movies may never have happened.
