You Got A Prequel In Your Eyes

David Chase is a smart man. However you may feel about the way his landmark TV series, The Sopranos, ended, there’s no denying the brilliance we witnessed along the way.

Now comes word that Chase, along with Lawrence Konner (Little House on the Prairie, Star Trek VI, The Sopranos), has written a feature-length prequel to the series titled The Many Saints of Newark, and New Line Cinema has purchased it.

Details are currently scarce, but it seems that the movie will be set during the riots that occurred in Newark during the 1960’s.

Presumably, some of the characters from the show could appear in this movie (and probably should, since this is being touted as a prequel), including:

  • Uncle Jun’ (Tony’s uncle and future nemesis)
  • Johnny-Boy (Tony’s father)
  • Livia (Tony’s mother)
  • Hesh Rabkin (Tony’s future business partner)
  • Uncle Ercole (Tony’s mysterious other uncle)
  • Paulie Walnuts (Tony’s future capo)
  • Feech La Manna (future parole violator)
  • Dickie Moltisanti (one of Tony’s role models for gangster life)
  • Carmine Lupertazzi (future boss of one of the New York families)
  • Phil Leotardo (future speed bump)
The Sopranos
One the countless times I genuinely laughed out loud while watching The Sopranos.

A host of other characters could appear as “Easter eggs” or “did-you-catch-that” moments, and my brain is already firing on who, why, and when.

Carmela, What’s Dis DNA Doin’ Over Here???

However, in the back of my head, I’m already suspicious of this property. Based on Ridley Scott’s bullshit “this is not a prequel but you’ll see DNA of the characters in it”, I am a little fearful that Chase may have written something else entirely and perhaps the Powers That Be are trying to drum up interest by shoe-horning the property name into it.

Says Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich:

“David [Chase] blah blah blah the Soprano universe blah blah feature film.”

I suppose we may take the reports at face value and, of course, time will tell.

In the meantime, I am very excited by this news because I love the series, I enjoy the genre, and Chase’s work is always a safe bet.

So, let’s hear some casting choices in the comments. The casting on the series was always brilliant and made stars out of then-unknown actors and actresses, and I’d expect nothing less from this movie.

Wait — “…the Soprano universe…”

What the fuck? Well, I guess we can expect Corrado: The First Gangster in November 2022.

I was going to link the theme song, because you know you’re hearing it in your head right now, but instead I’ll post what is probably my favorite moment from the entire series run:

Now, I think it’s time for you to start to seriously consider salads.

Adios, amigos y amiguitas!
