Greetings, Programs!

Memes have been around for several years now, but I’ve noticed in the past few years they went from just poking fun at things, they can get quite nasty.

As a contributor to the majority of the Sunday Satire posts since the end of September, I have had to view thousands of images. There are A LOT of bad ones out there. Not just poorly made or written, some just downright mean and ugly.

Memes, for the most part, are references to pop culture, but they also touch upon hot topics in our news cycles, those can be very funny, but also have a short shelf life. They can be considered a time capsule for events that happened throughout the year.

I commenced a search on the most popular memes for 2018, after looking at 40 or so sites, they pretty much all had the same ones. The funny thing is, a lot of them were pretty bad.

What I found most peculiar was the fact that they did not really touch on politics, there was a larger focus on celebrities and stupid people.

Let’s have a look at some of the more popular memes of 2018, and I’ll throw in some of my favorites at the end.

Tide Pods

Remember when this stupid fad was a thing?

Yanny/Laurel

Although more of an audio sensation from 2018, it did create several memes.

Yodel Boy

Mason Ramsey became a viral sensation back in April 2018. He even appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Steven Crowder

This one started back in February 2018. Steve was at the TCU campus for one of his “Change My Mind” segments and set this table up:

Well, as you know, on the Internet, everything is a challenge:

BBQ Becky

A video posted on YouTube back in April 2018 began this onslaught of memes:

The kicker is, she was correct, they were in a non-charcoal area. California craziness at it’s finest. Apparently, she is a senior project manager at an environmental resources and services company in Oakland, her work focuses on air quality, but not the law! No police officer would have arrested them.
