Michael Bay is responsible for directing exactly one good movie that no one has to make excuses for enjoying and that’s The Rock.
All of his other pictures required several layers of caveats that include phrases like “guilty pleasure”, “the first one was good” and “Scarlett Johansson’s boobs.”
For a filmmaker who started his career by helming at least thirty-five music videos for everyone from Donny Osmond to Styx, it’s a miracle to get even one coherent movie.
Now, Bay is back with his first robot-less, big-budget movie in the last fourteen years, the original high-concept actioner 6 Underground.
The logline is short and very, very sweet:
Six billionaires fake their own deaths and form an elite vigilante squad in order to take down notorious criminals.

That is pretty damn generic. My pulse never went about eighty-five.
And I’m getting sick of Ryan Reynolds. I got nothing but love in my heart for Deadpool but Reynolds’ shtick is well-past expired.
Who’s Getting Rich Off This?
Nobody, because this actually looks like a $150 million movie and not just a $150 million Netflix movie.
The car accidents, the locations, the sets. The money is up there to see.
I think these big-time directors are taking Netflix projects just for the graft; they can probably skim twenty to thirty percent right off the top.
Just hired your brother-in-law to do the catering and the effects.
So Who’s Not Getting Rich?
The guys behind cinematic Deadpool, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, came up with the concept for the film and are producing alongside Bay.
I guess that is good news? Deadpool is pretty fun, right?
Some more good news is that Michael Bay was executive producer on the excellent Jack Ryan for Amazon Prime. Whatever knocks you have on that series — and we’ve heard a few — the combat action wasn’t one of them.
Maybe all those Trans bucks have turned down Bay’s intensity settings?
It doesn’t look like it.
Co-starring alongside Ryan Reynolds as “One” are Dave Franco (“Two”), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (“Three”), Adria Arjona (“Four”), Corey Hawkins (“Five”), Ben Hardy (“Six”) and Mélanie Laurent.
Well, we know the money didn’t go to the cast.
