How Did We Miss This?

I’ll tell you how: Jean Claude Van Damme has spent the last decade poking fun at his persona in projects like JCVD and Jean-Claude Van Johnson. Sure, he’s been in a lot of direct-to-nowhere releases like 6 Bullets and Kill Em All but the only thing that has garnered him attention is when he mocks himself.

Meanwhile, Dolph Lundgren has been appearing in titles like Kindergarden Cop 2, Female Fight Squad and Don’t Kill It.

The last thing that I remember Van Damme or Lundgren being in anything that was even half-way good would be Timecop and Rocky 4, respectively. I don’t want to hear about 1989’s The Punisher; it’s a trash-tier action movie, at best.

The Punisher needs — nay deserves — a neo-noir approach like The Dark Knight and shouldn’t be just another 80s Schwarzenegger, shoot-em-up knockoff.

Sure, they both appeared in the Expendables series but let’s not pretend that those movies are quality in anything but cast and production value only.

Now we get Van Damme and Lundgren together again (for the fifth time) in what looks to be a serious, sober, spec-ops action-thriller that shares a name with the notorious mercenary army military contractor. How serious? Here is the serious synopsis:

A deep cover operative awakens to find himself imprisoned on a submarine. With the help of a fellow prisoner and an amateur agent, he must race against the clock to escape the vessel and expose who set him up.

Ah, so the “black water” thing is actually literal. Sounds serious tho.

Just check out all the serious posters for this damn thing:

Black Water dive, dive, dives onto VOD (I’m assuming) on June 29, 2018.
