It looks like the ethnic demographic, algorithmic-pandering template has been perfected and we are getting our first taste of the Asian version of the old fairy tale about the poor girl who meets a rich guy, then tries to be accepted by said guy’s family, and blah, blah, blah, hilarity ensues.

Crazy Rich Asians
Make sure to spring for 3D IMAX

Crazy Rich Asians, based on the book of the same name written by Kevin Kwan, stars Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong, Gemma Chan and portraying the “sassy urban Asian”, Awkwafina (no relation to the bottled water).

IMDb gives this synopsis:

The story follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick’s (Golding) hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down

Sounds original. Here’s the trailer:

Well, needless to say I will not be watching this, being as I am not a 12-year-old Malaysian girl (despite what my online profile says).

Fun fact for you: Crazy Rich Asians is directed by Jon M. Chu. “Who is that?”. Well, my friend, he is none other than the director of G.I Joe: Retaliation!

I guess he failed his Marvel director’s audition.

Crazy Rich Asians opens August 17th, 2018.
