Yardie

Idris Elba is a busy man these days. After filming parts in Molly’s Game, Thor, The Luther Series and the ill-fated Dark Tower movie, and before he stars as a labour leader during the height of the cold war in Jeremy Corbyn’s Czech Mate, Elba found time to film his directorial debut, Yardie.

Yardie is a 2018 British crime film based on the novel of the same name by Jamaican-born writer Victor Headley. The movie centers on the life of a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen), whose brother was murdered in their home of Kingston when D was just a child. D ended up being raised by the local mafia boss and years later has the chance to take revenge on the man who killed his brother. Everaldo Creary, Shantol Jackson, and Stephen Graham co-star.

The term yardie, particularly within the Caribbean expatriate and Jamaican diaspora community, to refer to persons of Jamaican origin. In the UK however, it became synonymous with gang activity, mostly of the gun running variety.

The movie premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. While the gangster thriller is still seeking U.S. distribution.

Between YardieCzech Mate (Due to start filming in late 2018) and possibly being a front runner to land the soon to be open James Bond gig, especially after the recent success of Black Panther, Elba is looking to have a very successful 2018 and beyond.
