Tom Hanks is taking us back to WWII with Greyhound which he not only stars in but also handled screenwriting duties.

Something he has done in the past with some good success.

That’s a destroyer.

Here’s what he’ll be bringing us:

During World War II, in the winter of 1942, Navy officer Commander George Krause (Tom Hanks) is given command of a Navy destroyer. He finds himself in charge of leading an international convoy of 37 Allied ships across the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by a wolf pack of Nazi U-boats.

Directed by Aaron Schneider (Get Low) from a screenplay by Tom Hanks, which he adapted from the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester.

Besides Hanks playing the Captain, the cast is pretty familiar if not solid.

Elisabeth Shue is here for one of her “not quite yearly” film roles. She was last seen in  2018’s Death Wish update.

Other cast includes Stephen Graham (The Irishman), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (6 Underground) and Karl Glusman (Devs).

Forester’s novels have a decent track record on-screen, The African Queen with Bogart and Hepburn and Sink The Bismarck, so hopes are modest to high that this one will be decently done.

The main criticism I have at this point is the abundance of CGI.

At it’s best, it doesn’t contribute well to the feel of the era and at worst it’s a bit of distraction.

The early surfacing shot of the submarine makes me remember how much I miss practical effects.

Greyhound will land May 7, 2020.
