The previous trailers for this Brad Pitt real-space epic were very ponderous and ethereal. Not to the level of a 2001 but certainly something in the Interstellar range.

This IMAX trailer reveals a lot of the story and it seems to be more of a straight actioner that pulls from Gravity and Sunshine than anything supernatural.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, both of those were fantastic takes on space exploration, with Sunshine obviously being the more ambitious as well as more flawed film.

Ad Astra has some familiar faces from the space genre, including Tommy Lee Jones (Space Cowboys) and Liv Tyler (Armageddon). I’m not sure if Donald Southerland has astronaut somewhere in his credits but given how long he’s been around it would seem impossible that he wouldn’t.

The movie is directed by James Grey who has done a lot of indie to low-budget stuff with middling results; his work is always well-crafted but stops short of compelling or commercially successful.

Maybe Ad Astra changes his fortunes:

There is also a new TV spot as well as a featurette:

Ad Astra launches into theaters only on September 20, 2019.
