What if you threw a party and no one bothered to show up?

If you don’t know what it feels like, then just ask Batwoman.

The show just had a highly publicized and “historic” episode in which the character came out of the closet publicly and no one watched. In fact, it was the lowest-rated episode of the show so far.

Normally the show averages about 1.26 million viewers. For this big reveal episode, it could not even hit 1M, coming in at only 780K viewers. That’s a 38% drop in eyeballs watching the show.

Ouch.

What makes it even worse is that Batwoman was expected to get a nice ratings boost from the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event that just took place on The CW, but it did not happen and for the first time all season Supergirl beat it in the ratings.

Are people tired of all the political flag-waving and making sure everyone is properly represented? Has society reached a point where maybe coming out of the closet can’t be used to save a show as it did 20 or so years ago? Are we really more evolved than Hollywood gives us credit for?

Probably. You can’t just push something like this anymore and expect the world to give you a 10-minute standing ovation.

Nor can the people behind the show expect you to care if they tell you that they don’t want you watching their show because you’re not what they consider to be the right audience.

But at the same time, the show’s rating failure has a lot to do with Batwoman just being bad and viewers not accepting how poorly written and put together it is.

Bottom line, even though critics may have applauded the woke nature of the show, viewers saw past that and understood that alone is not enough to make a show worth watching. Good writing and producing is what’s going to make people come back every week.

It’s a shame. In the comics, Batwoman’s initial run after being created ten years ago was extremely well put together and had some of the best artwork around. Art so good it forced you to pick up an issue to see what it was all about.

Unfortunately, they took some pretty good source material, threw on a Party City level costume and called it a day.
