Tell Me About It, Jake

Dan Gilroy is teaming up again with his Nightcrawler co-stars to bring us a very bizarre look at the world of the Los Angeles art scene.

Velvet Buzzsaw sees Jake Gyllenhaal playing a smug art critic instead of a megalomaniac videographer with Renne Russo doing a turn as the greedy gallery owner as opposed to her desperate TV producer.

As with Nightcrawler, I imagine the dynamics between the two character types might make for some interesting drama… except this time there is a twist.

From the official synopsis:

After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

I hope it turns out to be some weird mass hallucination or something. After the hyper-realism of Nightcrawler, this seems like a step down for Gilroy.

Check it out:

It doesn’t look like a mass hallucination. I have no idea what this is supposed to be: Art World Horror Farce?

Is that a new genre? I hope not.

Velvet Buzzsaw is getting pretty good reviews coming out of Sundance (86% / 7.2 on RT) so it might be something worth checking out.

Gyllenhaal always makes me crack up when he goes manic and self-important.

Velvet Buzzsaw drops on Netflix on February 1st.
