Will not get too much into details on this today. Once the Holidays are over, we will do a deep dive into this subject.
A couple of weeks ago, a study was unleashed and all the NPCs got themselves into a tizzy about this. The study claimed:
“Films with women in leading roles earn more than their male counterparts at the box office.”
Multiple websites began to crow about this and how Hollywood needs to make a shift in their business model.
Looking at Box Office Mojo this morning, I wanted to see how true this claim was, here are the top three films numbers:
As you can see, Aquaman made over $24 million more than the two female-led films, Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee, combined.
Interesting, time to dig into this claim further.
I did a check on “Female-Led Films 2018”, Google brought up many articles and they pretty much all declared with glee the following films:
- Hotel Artemis
- Red Sparrow
- Tully
- A Wrinkle In Time
- The Spy Who Dumped Me
- Please Stand By
- Widows
- Tomb Raider
- Winchester
- The Nutcracker And The Four Realms
- Mortal Engines
- Vox Lux
- The Girl In The Spider’s Web
Yes, they all had female leads, most of them have great name recognition. Some are even Oscar winners.
Not one of those films opened number one at the box office.
The biggest female-led film of 2018 is Ocean’s 8. It made $140 million at the domestic box office and $297.7 worldwide.
Aquaman has already made $488 million worldwide.
As noted above, we shall look further into this study and run some numbers. I think we may be able to prove that this study is flawed, or they are lying.
One more item to note, last week’s “smash hit” Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse dropped 53% It sits at $64.7 million domestically on a $90 million production budget.
