It looks like the star of Prisoners and Nightcrawler is going to give movie audiences their first look at the evil illusionist and Spider-Man nemesis Mysterio.

Don’t bring up animated movies. Don’t.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Jake Gyllenhaal in Talks to Star in Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel

Additionally, Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr tells us:

I can confirm that Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the villainous Mysterio in Sony Pictures’ sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Kind of like a less scary Scarecrow…

Coincidentally, Gyllenhaal was considered as a replacement for Toby McGuire on Spider-Man 2 after McGuire injured his back while filming Sea-Biscuit.

Mysterio would be the second villain in a row that Spider-Man is going to face whose abilities are based on technology and not “super-powers” in the traditional sense.

This is good news because it points to another smaller, more grounded story, which is one of the reasons that Spider-Man: Homecoming was so successful despite being the second reboot of the franchise in 6 years.

We’ll also get another experienced veteran actor who can go psycho and do menacing to face-off against the boyish, almost cherubic, Tom Holland. It’s a win all around.

From the Mysterio Wikipedia entry:

Quentin Beck does not possess superhuman abilities but he is an expert designer of special effects devices and stage illusions, a master hypnotist and magician and an amateur chemist and roboticist. He has extensive knowledge of hand-to-hand combat techniques learned as a stuntman, allowing him to engage in combat with Spider-Man despite his foe’s superior physical abilities and using his skills at misdirection as a further method of self-defense.
