Paramount Pictures has announced rights acquisition to book one of Marcus Sakey’s sci-fi superhero trilogy Brilliance Saga — also called Brilliance.

In this trilogy, 1% of the world’s children have been born with superpowers.

The Amazon summary of the novel is rather lengthy:

In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking.

They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists.

His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in—and betray his own kind.

Brilliants are also called “twists”, “abnorms”, “aspies” or “gamers” and they threatened to destabilize the existing world order that was built by the Normals.

Will Smith is set to play Cooper, a federal agent who works for the Department of Analysis and Response who is tasked to track down and liquidate brilliants who use their gifts for ill. The agent is himself a brilliant, with the ability for game theory analysis that allows him to go preg-cog and react before things happen — kind of like George Bush.

BTW, his daughter is also a brilliant.

Jesus. This author really did his homework. He hit all the touchpoints.

Not only a bad Blade Runner hack — you could say I, Robot as well — but also ripping a bit off from Minority Report.

Is Cooper’s daughter named Brilliant, too? Or would that be too much?

Maybe Will Smith is also the daughter and the guy he is tracking?

Akiva Goldsman is set to adapt the script.

You at a pitch meeting. This guy slaps your script out your hand. What you do?

Timeout, Green Bay

This is the second time Smith has been on board for the role.

Legendary Pictures acquired the rights for the Brilliance Saga in 2013. David Koepp wrote the screenplay. Julius Onah was directing.

Will Smith signed up then dropped out. Jared Leto was next in line for the lead role of Nick Cooper but also backed out.

Noomi Rapace was signed up to the most dangerous man woman alive.

Will this movie ever happen? Hopefully not.

Definitely not with Smith or Goldsman involved, because they both:
