Even though it was never really in as bad a shape as other franchises, for a while things didn’t look too good for Doom. Doom 3, the series’ first reboot and intro into modern gaming was met with middling reviews and underwhelmed many fans.

Eventually, Doom publisher id Software was purchased by Bethesda and took over publishing the series, which resulted in the great Doom reboot in 2016.

Coming soon is the sequel to the reboot, Doom Eternal.

The thing that makes Doom a great game is that it’s not really a shooter, but rather a survival game.

A good Doom game always makes you feel that if you slow down for a second that something is gonna kill you. It gets you so paranoid that if you walk into an empty room you think something must be wrong. And completing a level does give you a sense of accomplishment, but rather a sense of relief that you made it to the end. The people behind Eternal seem to get that.

The game does not release for a few weeks, but Bethesda has given a preview to a number of people online and it looks glorious.

The game has such a simple concept too. The gates of Hell have opened, kill everything that moves. The franchise requires no story. All that is just filler.

How can you not love that?

Doom Eternal is available for the PS4, XBox One, PC and Stadia on March 20.
