With its most disappointing cinematic entry to date currently stinking up the box office, could the X-Men be about to return to one of their most triumphant mediums?

The 1990s were a high point for animated comic book shows.  DC had the seminal Batman: The Animated Series and it’s Superman partner a few years later.  Over at Marvel, they had arguably the best of the bunch.

X-Men: The Animated Series ran for five seasons and a total of 76 episodes from 1992 to 1997. It was a critical smash and commercially successful.  It was also one of the first major cartoons to feature serialized storytelling.  Being X-Men it also didn’t shy away from mature themes.

Now longtime X-Men artist Larry Houston has been speaking to the Hollywood a Reporter:

“The one thing we’d like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off”.

If it were to return, it’s suggested they would like to keep the aesthetic and approach of the original animated series.  The report comes ahead LA Comic Con in October when the cast is due to reunite for a panel.

Now I have a sudden urge to rewatch Batman: Mask Of Phantasm for the first time in 15 years.
