Nic Cage still owes the taxman a few dollars. As a result, it looks like we’re being treated to another oddball performance from him in Color Out Of Space, which is based on the short story by legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.
After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a living nightmare.
Along with Cage, the cast also features Joely Richardson and Tommy Chong in supporting roles.
Most surprisingly though, one of the producers of this thing is Elijah Wood.
Though best known for pushing Golem into the lava of Mount Doom, in recent years he has started producing low budget films of this genre, such as The Boy, and what many people consider to be one of Cage’s only good films in recent years, Mandy.
Produced for only 6 million bucks, it is clearly a low budget flick.
After the success of Infinity War, rocks and stones are a big thing in Hollywood now. This film has one, and as mentioned yesterday, Wonder Woman 1984 will revolve around one as well.
The film is being directed by Richard Stanley and as you can see, the trailer makes a big deal that this is his big return to directing.
His name did not seem familiar to me either, but then a quick Google search revealed that the last time he was hired to direct a film was 1996’s The Island of Dr. Moreau, which he was quickly fired for and replaced by John Frankenheimer.
That film wound up giving us this classic scene which is still studied in film classes the world over…
I’m going to be honest with you. I’m not a big Lovecraft guy. Most of my knowledge of his work is from Metallica and South Park. And the Ikea in Brooklyn that I go to is also a few blocks away from where he used to live.
But based on what I do know of him, this does not feel very Lovecraftian. Feels more thriller than the horror normally associated with him.
Cage also seems a lot more subdued than the kind of crazy you expect from him in flicks like this.
