After the success of his Spider-man trilogy, a Sam Raimi directed film has become somewhat of a rarity. In fact, he has only directed two films since 2007’s Spider-man 3, deciding to spend more of his time as a producer of horror instead.

Today the red band trailer for his newest production, a reboot of the horror franchise, The Grudge, hit the internet.

After a young mother murders her family in her own house, a single mother and detective tries to investigate and solve the case. Later, she discovers the house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.

This is the fourth film in The Grudge franchise. The first two starred Sarah Michelle Gellar when she was still a thing and the entire series is based on the 2002 Japanese horror film, Ju-On: The Grudge.

The film’s cast consists mostly of unknown actors. It’s biggest name is John Cho, who since maturing out of the Harold and Kumar films has been finding steady work as a genre actor.

The red band certification is kind of deceiving. Other than just one shot of a rotting body, there really isn’t anything to be offended by.

The film actually finished shooting a year and a half ago and has been sitting on the shelf for about a year waiting to be released. Reshoots took place this past summer.

When paired with the fact it is being released in January, which is typically a slow month for releases and used as a dumping ground for studios, you have to question the amount of confidence the studio has in it.

Either way, horror fans can look forward to The Grudge releasing in cinemas January 3.
