No One Cared Who I Was Until I Put On The Makeup

There’s been a lot of talk on the festival circuit about Phoenix possibly getting an Oscar nomination for his performance as the title character in Todd Phillips’ Joker.

Based on this trailer it’s probably more than just talk:

“All I Have Are Negative Thoughts”

I have no idea where this Joker origin story fits in with canon, the DCEU, Batman or anything else involved with comics and comic book movies.

I don’t think it really matters.

The movie looks great, there is some genuine pathos in not only Phoenix’s performance but also this idea of a man abused by the system, beaten down by the world, betrayed by his friends and colleagues on a movie web site he runs –

Oops. Went a little too deep there.

It will be curious to see how this version of The Joker is going to play in the social soapboxing media and the Twitter cloud.

I’m willing to bet that they start calling this Joker an incel, garbage person, Trump supporter, privileged, entitled, etc.

“White makeup applied atop his already white skin is more than just an effect, it’s a symbol the Joker’s — as well as our nation’s — deeply ingrained white supremacy.”
The Root, October 2019

Weird that they had no problem with a psychopathic Joker who terrorized a city and killed hundreds (thousands?).

In fact, they loved that guy. As long as he wasn’t weak.

Woke weirdos love evil people as long as they are strong.

Maybe he’ll get some credit for hooking up with Zazie Beetz.

Joker will demand that you laugh in theaters nationwide on October 4, 2019.
